    Lorena Aguayo-Márquez

Lorena Aguayo-Marquez, educator, advocate, community organizer and outdoor enthusiasts

Lorena is passionate about educational equity, social justice and connecting communities of color to the outdoors. She has dedicated her time to serving her community by empowering individuals to learn, access resources, mobilize, and advocate for themselves and their community. Her efforts are directed towards catalyzing transformative systemic change, lifting everyone up and unlocking their full potential.  Lorena currently works at Grand Rapids Community College, where she has held a variety of positions supporting students, working with federal, state and foundation funded grants to train and build the West Michigan workforce in her 16-year tenure.  She currently works as the Program Manager for Strengthening Community Colleges Healthcare Grant, responsible for building capacity, increasing equity and access to trainings in the healthcare industry.

Lorena started her walking/running journey in 2011 where she did several 5ks with friends.  She was training to do a 10k when she injured her knee twice and kept her away from running and other outdoor activities for years.  In 2019, after gaining lots of weight and constantly taking painkillers to reduce the pain, she made the decision to change her lifestyle. Using all the resources available to she started to be active and  live in a healthier manner.  In 2023, she ran her first 5k after not running over a decade and she is planning to run her first 10k at the Riverbank.

Lorena has lived in the Grand Rapids area for the past 25 years.  She enjoys spending time with her family/friends, reading and being outdoors. You might see her walking/running in the southeast side of Grand Rapids, working out in the gym, kayaking, biking, hiking or bathing in the sun at one of the many beaches of Lake Michigan.
